Our story
In 2023, we embarked on an incredible journey to disrupt some of the conversations happening around AI.
We noticed that most conversations about AI were shaped by extractionist and corporate-led Global North business frameworks and approaches that still referred to the global South in dated colonial terms. We also noted that much of what was happening in the global South wasn't being centred in AI development conversations that centred non-Western value systems. How do we centre global South intentions and, most of all, value systems into AI conversations and overall AI governance? What success stories were already out in the world of how AI was being used?
So we did something about it. Our inaugural summit was held in October 2024 in Saint Lucia
Conversations about data sovereignty, culturally specific use of AI technology, research, and value systems baked into AI infrastructures shape our daily lives. We also noticed this wasn't geographically confined, and the conversation needed to continue no matter where we called home. And so the AIGSS was formed.
Our first event was held on the island of Saint Lucia and was well attended by a wide range of people - educators, students, policy-makers, government officials, dignitaries, researchers and so on with tremendous support from many.
