As with every technological wave, there is a resurgence of hope triggered by AI and other emerging technologies. The million-dollar question remains, can these new technologies offer a pathway to economic growth and advancement for the Global South, in a way not seen previously?

The rich cultural and creole heritage of Saint Lucia is the perfect backdrop against which to have a more focused discussion on how AI and emerging technologies can be leveraged to provide employment for our talented youth, artistes, cultural entrepreneurs, film and television producers and digi-prenuers in the creative sectors. The Creative sector, or the orange economy is being pitched as one of the areas of potential growth for the Global South, recognizing the rich untapped resources, that could prove to be a significant foreign exchange earner for many countries, thereby creating employment and enhancing the economic independence of its citizens.

The conference takes place in October 29th – October 31st. This is very intentional, as October is dedicated to showcasing the rich cultural milieu and creole heritage of Saint Lucia, dubbed Creole Heritage Month!

This conference will bring together experts, scholars, practitioners, industry leaders, financial and lending agencies, regional and international multilateral organizations, and cultural custodians to explore innovative strategies for preserving and monetizing cultural assets by leveraging AI and emerging technological advancements.

The conference aims to address the challenges and highlight the opportunities presented by AI and other emerging technologies in the context of cultural preservation and economic growth. The conference will explore how these technologies can be leveraged to safeguard tangible and intangible cultural heritage, (such as language, music, and traditions), while creating sustainable economic models for creative sectors.

about the Location

The beautiful, picturesque island of Saint Lucia will be host to a groundbreaking conference focusing on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies with the creative industries in the Global South. Every technological wave has promised to deliver a pathway out of poverty for the Global South.  That optimism is often tempered by the structural dynamics of the international political economy (IPE) and the role of the Global South in the international division of labour (IDL). Historically the Global South has been confined largely to the production of primary commodities with little to no value-added, hence they are seemingly stuck on the lower rungs of the global value chain.

As with every technological wave, there is a resurgence of hope triggered by AI and other emerging technologies. The million-dollar question remains, can these new technologies offer a pathway to economic growth and advancement for the Global South, in a way not seen previously?

Fun fact: Saint Lucia boasts the highest ratio per capita of Nobel laureates in the world. Two winners have come from Saint Lucia – Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1979, and Derek Walcott received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992.
