Thoughts on the Summit
Thoughts on the Summit - Among other things, AI will be shaped by technological advancements, economic drivers and social dynamics, influenced by cultural contexts, within various normative frameworks which prescribe policy, regulation, ethics, and other governance matters. The University of the West Indies (UWI) is an active contributor across these multiple dimensions through research, innovation, thought leadership, education, and participation in governance at all levels. Recognized as one of the Caribbean’s strengths in a SWOT analysis performed under the Caribbean AI Initiative, UWI is host to a number of teams conducting both fundamental and applied AI research. The institution has hosted various convenings around AI and continues to contribute to other such events. Our Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering on the St. Augustine Campus is introducing Continuing Professional Education (CPE) as well as postgraduate programmes in AI at the certificate, Master of Applied Science, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy levels.
In addition to these contributions to shaping the future of AI, UWI is prominently represented on several relevant regional and international bodies including the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Body on AI; and the Digital Public Infrastructure Safeguards Initiative of the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology and United Nations Development Programme. I am thrilled that the AI Global South Summit has been themed “preserving and monetizing creole cultural heritage” – a matter of tremendous interest to UWI as evident through our many academic and research programmes, projects, collaborations, publications and community engagements.
