Damian E. Greaves, Cert ED. BA. MS. C. MSPH. Ph D.
Damian Eisenghower Greaves is Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at St. George’s University. He was also the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Director of Continuing Education & Professional Development for the School of Arts and Sciences. Professor Greaves is currently a consultant in the subject areas of Sociology, Politics, and Health Systems.
His educational and professional qualifications include a Ph.D. in Health Services Management & Policy, two Master of Science Degrees in Public Health and one in Social Sciences, and a bachelor’s in history & Sociology with Education (with Hons.). He is the author of several publications on health and related areas in regional and international journals. His latest publications include: “Facilitators of and barriers to COVID-19 vaccination in Grenada: a qualitative study,” published in the Pan American Journal of Health in 2023, and a Book Chapter entitled “Public Leadership in the Small Island Developing States of the Anglophone Caribbean,” published in the Research Handbook on Public Leadership: Re-imagining Leadership in a Post-pandemic Paradigm in 2023. He is currently writing a book entitled, “Leading & Managing Health Systems Better in the English-Speaking Caribbean: Lessons Learned from COVID-19,” earmarked for publication by The University of the West Indies Press in 2025.
In Saint Lucia, he served as Parliamentary representative for approximately ten years, holding the portfolios of Minister for Community Development, Culture, Local Government, Cooperatives and Ecclesiastical Affairs from 1997-2001 and then Minister for Health, Family Affairs, Cooperatives and Gender Relations from 2001-2006. Subsequently, he led the Opposition in the Senate for three years, from 2006 to 2009.
Dr. Greaves has been engaged in several consultancies and academic panels. He has presented numerous public lectures and addresses. He currently serves as the External Examiner for the Humanities and Education Program for the Health and Family Life Education Course, University of the West Indies, St. Augustin Campus, Trinidad & Tobago. He also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Management Issues in Healthcare Systems. He is a Peer Reviewer of manuscripts submitted to the International Journal of Health Governance and The Universal Journal of Public Health.
Additionally, he serves as an advisor to the Grenada National Reparations Commission after having served as a member of the preparatory committee. Dr. Greaves has also served on the National Health Insurance Advisory Committee, Government of Grenada, and is the immediate Past President of the Grenada National Chronic Non-Communicable Disease Commission, serving in this capacity from 2016 to 2021. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition, headquartered in Barbados. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Grenada Planned Parenthood Association (GPPA).
